Drive gears convert motor output into the mechanical force that moves an overhead crane along its rails. In steel mill and heavy manufacturing environments, these gears operate under extreme loads and are coated with heavy-duty lubricants that attract metal fines and abrasive contaminants. When a drive gear comes out for scheduled maintenance, the first step is always cleaning — and the quality of that cleaning directly affects the accuracy of the inspection that follows.
In this project, Calumet Chicago cleaned an overhead crane drive gear using a Cuda 4860 front-load aqueous parts washer. The 4860 features a 48-inch turntable diameter and a 5,000-pound load capacity, making it ideally sized for large gears, housings, and heavy industrial components. The drive gear was loaded onto the turntable, and the machine’s 7.5 HP pump delivered 200 GPM of pressurized hot water through the spray system, stripping away grease, lubricant, and embedded metal particles. Total wash time was 20 minutes.
The result was a thoroughly cleaned gear with every tooth surface, root, and flank free of contamination — ready for non-destructive testing and dimensional measurement. Without this level of cleaning, maintenance teams risk reinstalling gears with hidden defects that could lead to unplanned downtime.
The Cuda 4860 is one of the most popular models in steel mill maintenance shops because it handles the size and weight of the parts these facilities deal with daily. Calumet Chicago provides installation, training, and ongoing preventative maintenance support to keep your 4860 running at peak performance.
