Projects
Steel slab carriers transport red-hot and cooled steel slabs between processing stages in a steel mill — exposure that leaves their electric motors coated in scale, carbon dust, hydraulic fluid overspray, and general mill grime. These motors need regular cleaning as part of the mill’s preventative maintenance program, both for inspection purposes and to ensure proper cooling airflow when the motor returns to service.
In this project, Calumet Chicago cleaned a small motor pulled from a steel slab carrier using a Cuda SJ-15 top-load aqueous parts washer. The SJ-15 is the newest addition to the Cuda top-load lineup, featuring a patented spray wash technology that eliminates the need for a drive motor, gears, and pulleys. Instead, a water-propelled spray arm with 23 nozzles spins around a stationary parts basket, hitting the part from every angle. The motor was placed in the 32-by-21-inch basket, and the wash cycle ran for 15 minutes.
The SJ-15’s compact footprint and 350-pound load capacity make it an excellent fit for maintenance shops that clean smaller components — motors, valve bodies, pump housings, and hand tools. Leasing through Calumet Chicago is one of the most affordable ways to bring aqueous cleaning in-house, eliminating the time and cost of sending parts out for cleaning or relying on solvent tanks.
For steel mills handling dozens of small motors and components per week, the SJ-15 pays for itself quickly in labor savings and reduced solvent disposal costs alone. Contact Calumet Chicago to arrange a demo.
