Blast furnace demister filters are essential components in the gas cleaning systems of steel mills. Positioned in the off-gas treatment pathway, these filters remove fine particulate and moisture droplets from the hot gas stream exiting the furnace — protecting downstream equipment and ensuring environmental compliance. Over time, the filters become clogged with a dense mixture of iron oxide dust, calcium compounds, and tar-like residues that reduce their effectiveness and restrict gas flow.
In this project, Calumet Chicago cleaned a set of blast furnace demister filters using a Cuda aqueous parts washer. The filters were loaded into the wash chamber, and the pressurized hot-water spray system went to work dissolving and flushing out the accumulated contamination from the filter mesh and frame surfaces. The aqueous cleaning process restored gas flow characteristics without the use of harsh chemical baths or abrasive methods that could damage the filter media.
Replacing demister filters is expensive and time-consuming. Cleaning and returning them to service is a far more cost-effective approach — provided the cleaning method is thorough enough to restore adequate performance. The Cuda’s high-pressure spray system reaches into the filter’s internal passages where manual cleaning methods cannot, removing contamination that would otherwise continue to restrict flow even after surface cleaning.
Steel mills that incorporate regular filter cleaning into their maintenance schedules see extended filter life, improved gas cleaning efficiency, and reduced capital expenditure on replacement filters. Calumet Chicago provides Cuda parts washers sized for the demanding components found in blast furnace operations, with support for installation, training, and preventative maintenance.
