CUDA SJ-15 Aqueous Parts Washer: Operator Training & Best Practices
Your Quick-Start Guide to the CUDA SJ-15
The CUDA SJ-15 is one of the most popular top-load aqueous parts washers in heavy industrial shops across the Midwest — and for good reason. It uses patented water-propelled spray arm technology with 23 nozzles, a 350-lb load capacity, and zero flammable solvents. It cleans like an industrial dishwasher, not a solvent tank.
Whether your team just received a new SJ-15 or you need a refresher, we put together this training video that covers everything from first startup to ongoing maintenance. Watch it here:
Below, we’ve broken out the key operating procedures covered in the video for quick reference.
Before You Start: Pre-Operation Checks
Every shift should begin with these basics:
- Check the low water light. If it’s on, add water until it turns off. Proper water level protects both the heating element and the pump.
- Allow 2 to 4 hours for heat-up. The cleaning solution should reach at least 150°F before running a wash cycle. Running below temperature reduces cleaning effectiveness significantly.
- Visually inspect the spray bar. Manually rotate it before loading to make sure nothing is blocking its movement.
Loading the SJ-15
- The SJ-15 has a working load limit of 300 lbs. Do not overload the basket — overloading prevents proper spray rotation and reduces cleaning quality.
- Position parts so the spray solution can reach every surface. Make sure all items have full spray coverage.
- Before starting, manually rotate the spray bar one more time to confirm clearance with the loaded parts.
Running a Wash Cycle
- Close the lid completely.
- Set the timer between 5 and 60 minutes, depending on how heavily soiled the parts are.
- For heavier contamination, repeat the cycle or rotate parts between cycles for improved exposure.
- Always confirm the lid is fully closed before starting — the SJ-15 has a safety interlock, but good habits matter.
Safety: What Every Operator Needs to Know
The SJ-15 runs hot water and industrial detergent under pressure. These precautions are non-negotiable:
- The lid is always hot during operation. Never attempt to open the machine while it is running.
- After the timer ends, wait at least 30 seconds before opening the lid.
- Stand to the side when opening to avoid steam exposure.
- Always wear gloves and safety glasses when loading, unloading, or handling parts.
- Parts will be hot immediately after cleaning — use proper PPE before handling.
Detergent Management
- Add one scoop of detergent approximately once per week under normal use.
- Only add detergent after the water has reached 150°F.
- Foaming may indicate the solution temperature is too low or that detergent levels need adjustment.
- Do not overuse detergent — too much creates excessive residue and actually reduces cleaning efficiency.
Oil Skimming: Extend Your Solution Life
Proper oil skimming is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your SJ-15 performing well:
- Run the oil skimmer one to two times per week to remove floating oils from the surface.
- Never operate the skimmer during a wash cycle. Turn the heater off and allow the water to cool first.
- Collected waste oil should be disposed of in your designated CUDA waste drum.
- Regular skimming extends solution life and improves cleaning results — it’s the single best maintenance habit you can build.
Routine Maintenance Tips
- Keep spray bars and debris screens clean to maintain spray pressure and coverage.
- Routine inspection prevents unplanned downtime — catching a clogged nozzle early takes minutes, not hours.
